Coaching Tip: My friend, who had just made a whopper of a mistake, said to me “I hate myself for being imperfect.” How often I hear this from clients, friends and family. The irony is that it is the imperfections that make us perfect and unique individuals. If instead of rejecting ourselves, we viewed our actions with curiosity and compassion, then we’d have some real potential for growth and learning. And if we can learn to do this for ourselves… then we can do so for others and their “imperfections” as well. I think this is why the first four letters in career are CARE. Our work is the opportunity to care for what needs healing in ourselves and in so doing, opens the door to healing others. Now that is perfection. If we learn that coaching starts with awareness, we begin to have room for ourselves to learn.
